Come to the cabaret in its most immersive format yet.

Performance

Cabaret at the transformed Playhouse Theatre's Kit Kat Club was a delight, even before the show started (see Experience for details).

The source material for this show is simply very strong. Even so this production elevates it to another level thanks to dynamic staging and authentic performances.

Every moment landed, comic or tragic, and every song was delivered with conviction. Set in the round, it offers an intimate setting with much of the audience close to the performance which (with some exception) is shared evenly around.

While all performances were strong and are to be commended, I would highlight Cara Delevingne's performance as Sally offering a more "real" take on the character than might be typical. Cara perhaps does not have the pipes to belt out a thunderous tune, but instead provides a very believable characterisation through her softer singing voice that fits perfectly with the narrative as it steadily peels backs the layers of glamour towards its inevitable, sobering conclusion.

The staging is minimal and effective, and wonderfully dressed throughout. The band join the audience in the circle level along with an occasional wandering actor, all serving to (metaphorically) pull you out from your seat and into the story.

Experience

If you don't know by now, the preshow offers a trio of themed bars with performances of music and movement throughout. Now, I won't go as far as some reviewers and over-sell it, the expectation can easily exceed reality simply due to the size of the space and the number of ticket holders. However it's unique, the performers impressive, and it thoroughly prepares you for the show to come.

I recommend arriving an hour before the show starts for time to enter and enjoy this part of the experience, you are paying for it after all. On price, there's no getting around it, even compared to the inflated price of tickets this year Cabaret is expensive; but do consider that part covers the transformed space and its dedicated performers.

Seating is typical of traditional London theatres. On the circle I believe the view may be closer to the action on the section built behind the typical stage than it is on the "normal" side.

The acoustics were perfect with every word heard with full clarity.
